In general, the indicator should be immobilized on an organic carrier, such as a polymer, agarose, hydrogel, or cellulose, via methods including adsorption, chemical bonding, and the sol-gel method [18]. The carrier can then be fixed on the probe to form an optical pH sensor for sensing pH variation for long hours in a solution.
